4x4Beast Fabrication Project Rockalot

16" Bed Bob

Since our project Toy is a long bed and we plan on rock crawling it, we need to loose as much from behind the rear tires as possible so that we wont be dragging it around and getting hung up.

16" was the max we could take out since we were cutting the frame off to match and we needed to keep some frame for our leaf springs to mount to.  Read more about it below...

Seamless Bed Bob!

Instead of sectioning the bed like most, we pulled the rear cap off, cut 16" out of the bed sides and welded the cap back on just as they did at the factory.. seamless!
A big thanks to Big John's uncle Mel, a 30 year veteran body man who showed us the right way to do it.

Before and after picture    Removed section from bed side and rear cap    With the rear cap removed we can cut the floor. Leaving the tool box on the bed rails worked for keeping everything square.    Floor has been removed and the frame is marked for cutting

Mel did the finish work. He rolled the sheet metal to match the original curve into the tail light buckets while the rest of us grinded welds. The final photo shows Mel shrinking the panel to flatten out the warpage.

Rear cap clamped in possition and the frame is cut.    The only straight welds were for the bed rails and the lower panel. The white line is where Mel rolled the sheet metal into the tail light bucket to recreate that factory edge.    All welded back together except for the lower panel.    Welds are sanded down and Mel shrinks the sheet metal to remove the high spots created from the heat of welding.

John Sr. took over with light Bondo work, fiberglassed rust holes, dings, dents and then primmered the bare metal. Later John Sr. returned to the project to finish the cab and spray the infamous bright orange paint.

John Sr. added a thin layer of body filler as well as fiberglassing some rust holes forward of the bed bob.    VIDEO
